Silence in the Woods Published: a Thriller Novel Set in Vermont
I’m excited to announce the release of my latest thriller novel, Silence in the Woods. This is the second in a new series I’m writing called, “Monsters in the Green Mountains”. The series explores the darker side of the idyllic Vermont landscape, one that is dotted with Bigfoot, giant snakes, demonic dolls, man-eating bats and other folkloric tales.
Writing a thriller book is an exhilarating, frustrating and fun journey. This is the seventh thriller novel that I’ve published since 2013. One would think that the process would get easier in time. And it does…sort of. While I now don’t have the naivete of an inexperienced author, I still struggle (like any creative) with worries that my book isn’t the best it could be.
Will readers like it? Will they get spooked enough? Did I do a sufficient job of creating characters and settings that are real enough to immerse the reader fully in the story? Will this be a heart-pounding adventure for him or her? Did I do a good enough job?
That’s the bottom line: did I do a good enough job as a writer. I suppose that can only be determined by the reader…
Thriller Recommendation: Silence in the Woods
Q: “What’s Silence in the Woods about?”
In 1917, four friends and photojournalists head into the deep wilderness of Vermont. There is an area where several hikers and hunters have gone missing over the years, and the friends want to find out why.
While exploring Shiny Creek Trail, the group comes across a cave and spends the night. No one imagines the evil lurking there. A horrifying discovery leaves one person dead and two others missing. Two months later, Paul, one of the four, returns to the forest to find his wife. But will he find her before someone—or something—finds him?
Q: “Is this the first book in the “Monsters” series?”
Silence in the Woods is the prequel to Shadow in the Woods which was published in 2017, however the books can be read in any order.
That’s part of the fun or writing this “Monsters in the Green Mountains,” series: the books can be read in order, or as stand alone thriller novels. What ties them together are supernatural elements and the setting: all take place in natural, mostly wild places.
Q: “Whose books are yours most like?”
Most of my books have a supernatural element: a demonic spirit, a creepy doll that communicates, a house that may or may not be haunted…however, they remain in the thriller genre, not delving into the gruesome details and gore that horror books often do.
I would say that my books are similar to John Saul’s (but again, without the horror elements), Darcy Coates and Frank Peretti with maybe a little Louise Penny thrown in for good measure.
Q: “Aren’t you religious? Why do you write non-Christian, thriller books?”
Ahh, that’s a topic for an entire post and one that I’ve been thinking about doing for months now. In fact, there are really important parallels between most of the topics in my books and faith. Lots of people confuse religion with a relationship with God. Lots more people assume that being “in the world but not of it,” means that Believers should only read/watch/take in Christian material.
Just like I don’t hire only Christian plumbers, garbage collectors or inquire as to my dentist’s religious beliefs, I read books and watch movies and TV shows that aren’t Christian in nature. But I see everything–including my manuscripts–through my Spirit-influenced lens. Also, I don’t believe in bashing people over the head with my beliefs. Whether or not someone shares my faith, they can still enjoy my novels.
Q: “What if I don’t like your book(s)?”
Ha ha haa, not to worry! If you buy one of my books and don’t like it, I will never know. Unless you leave a scathing review, but in that case I’ll assume you were having a bad day and also kicked your cat and yelled at your kids…and won’t take it personally.
If you want to “try before you buy” though, why not sign up for my monthly newsletter? Each subscriber gets a free short story. Plus, you’ll be entered to win an autographed, printed copy of one of my books each month.
